Serious Illness Care Education Forum - Tufts University School of Medicine

Our June session of the Serious Illness Care Education Forum featured Dr. Tamara Vesel from Tufts University School of Medicine. She led a great discussion about An Innovative Workshop to Teach Primary Palliative Care Communication Skills to Fourth-Year Students at Tufts University School of Medicine. One particularly interesting approach of the workshop was using professionally trained actors as faculty in the course to teach students about non-verbal communication skills. Now required coursework for all fourth-years, the medical students responded very positively to the workshop and reported using many of the skills they had learned in subsequent clinical rotations.

By exploring how online forums can be utilized to capture a wide range of perspectives on health care communication, this study employed a mixed methods approach, integrating qualitative data from online forums with quantitative survey results, allowing the researchers to gain deeper insights into patient-clinician communication experiences and develop more inclusive health care communication strategies. This is particularly important for gaining insights into the experiences of historically marginalized communities.

The Health Equity Trends Summit, hosted by the Health Equity Compact was held at UMass Boston. It brought together over 400 in-person attendees and several hundred more online for a day packed with insightful discussions and keynote speeches. Notable speakers included Governor Healey and Michael Curry, one of the Coalition's leadership team members and the President & CEO of the Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers.

To emphasize the importance of integrating serious illness communication and palliative care into medical education, this study leverages feedback from medical students to identify gaps in current training. This will assist in developing a comprehensive, required curriculum that better prepares future physicians to handle serious illness discussions and palliative care. This initiative is aimed at addressing the inadequate preparation reported by students and aims to foster a more compassionate and effective approach to patient care.
