We’re excited to share the news that Governor Baker recently signed Bill H.5374 “An Act Relating to Economic Growth and Relief for the Commonwealth,” which included language authorizing the Executive Office of Elder Affairs (EOEA) to lead and administer the update of the Massachusetts MOLST program to a POLST (Portable Orders for Life Sustaining Treatment) Program aligned with national standards, including the development of a POLST e-Registry.

Sharing the origin story of our Massachusetts Medical Schools’ collaborative, this article outlines our journey towards standardizing training in serious illness communication for medical students across Massachusetts. This collaborative involves the state’s four medical schools and focuses on developing five core competencies, conducting curriculum mapping, and gathering student feedback through focus groups with the goal of ensuring all medical graduates are equipped with essential communication skills for palliative care.

Six years ago at the John F. Kennedy Library, we launched our Coalition. It was a truly unforgettable day, not just because Anna was 9 months pregnant. We have been reflecting on our collective work through the strategic planning process we started this spring.
